Israeli and Palestinian Postcards: Presentations of National Self "This is a significant and highly original contribution. . . . Semmerling provides a new way for both the specialist and the non-specialist in Israeli-Palestinian relations to understand the wide range of claims to national identity, as well as the biases informing those claims."--John R. Clarke, Annie Laurie Howard Regents Professor of Art History, University of Texas at AustinSearing images of suicide bombings and retaliatory strikes now define the Israeli-Palestinian conflict for many Westerners, but television and print media are not the only visual realms in which the conflict is playing out. Even tourist postcards and greeting cards have been pressed into service as vehicles through which Israelis and Palestinians present competing visions of national selfhood and conflicting claims to their common homeland. In this book, Tim Jon Semmerling explores how Israelis and Palestinians have recently used postcards and greeting cards to present images of the national self, to build national awareness and reinforce nationalist ideologies, and to gain international acceptance. He discusses and displays the works of numerous postcard/greeting card manufacturers, artists, and photographers and identifies the symbolic choices in their postcards, how the choices are arranged into messages, what the messages convey and to whom, and who benefits and loses in these presentations of national self. Semmerling convincingly demonstrates that, far from being ephemeral, Israeli and Palestinian postcards constitute an important arena of struggle over visual signs and the power to produce reality.
Condemned to Coexist: Israelis and Palestinians in the Promised Land by Daniel Gavron, This compelling book takes the reader behind the headlines of the confrontation between Israelis and Palestinians, examining its human dimension and setting it in a balanced historical context. In his search for understanding, Daniel Gavron talks to Israelis and Palestinians of all backgrounds and shades of opinion. Politicians and economists, entrepreneurs and writers, psychologists and teachers, men and women, veterans and youngsters, fervent militants and pragmatic realists all speak in these pages. We hear the Palestinian fighter and the Israeli soldier, the Jewish settler and the Arab Israeli, the negotiators from the opposite sides of the table, the bereaved parents. Reflecting the excruciating agony of both societies, these diverse voices emphasize the basic humanity of both peoples. In a startling final section, the author proposes a daring old-new idea to lead the region out of its tragic morass.

[Katz, 2004, 18] Genocide and ethnic conflict in Israel and Palestine - Claims and counterclaims of genocide involving the Israelis and Palestinians in the State of Israel and the surrounding territories date back at least as far as the founding of Israel itself. Though there is no consensus on whether ethnic cleansing and/or genocide has occurred or is occurring in this region, much less by which party or parties, there are events and movements on both sides of the dispute for which claims of genocide are examined.

In The Case for Peace , Dershowitz identifies twelve geopolitical barriers to peace between Israel and the subsequent uncompensated enlargement of "buffer zones" around the settlements, left them viewing the arrangement as merely cover for Israel to illegally seize additional land in settlements. Surveying this outpouring of vilification, Dershowitz deconstructs the smear tactics used by Israel-haters and shows how this kind of anti-Israel McCarthyism is aimed at scuttling any real chance of peace.
